When the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf bullion series in 1979, the only coin available was a 1 oz gold coin. The coins were initially available only in this weight with .999 gold fineness. In November 1982, the mint expanded the series with the introduction of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins, while also boosting the gold content to .9999 fineness.

On the obverse of 2022 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins is an image of Queen Elizabeth II. As head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II remains the formal head of state for Canada as it remains a constitutional monarchy. In this design, Elizabeth II is featured in right-profile relief. This design was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt for the Royal Canadian Mint and serves as the fourth-generation effigy for Canadian coins.
The reverse side of 2022 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins features a depiction of the sugar maple leaf. The official emblem of Canada, the sugar maple leaf is found on countless governmental symbols, including the national flag. The design found here was created in 1979 for this series by Walter Ott. Both fields of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf have radial lines in the background field to provide anti-counterfeiting security.
