This 1937-D Buffalo Nickel comes in Mint State 67+ condition, indicating it is among the highest-quality MS67 specimens. The coin features blast-white surfaces with bright, frosted luster. The reverse features a satin-like sheen, while a strong cartwheel luster is prominent across both sides. MS67 coins exhibit only three or four minuscule contact marks with no hairlines visible to the naked eye.
The 1937-D Buffalo Nickel from the Denver Mint holds the distinction of being the final year of the Buffalo design, which ended after nearly 25 years of production. The Denver facility produced approximately 17.8 million examples bearing the “D” mint mark. As the last hurrah for Fraser’s design, this date carries special significance for collectors completing Buffalo Nickel sets.
The obverse of the 1937-D Buffalo Nickel features a right-facing profile of a Native American man with braided hair and feathers. Fraser explained that the design was created using features from Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree, though historians continue to debate this origin. The word “LIBERTY” is positioned to the left of the portrait, with the date appearing below.
The reverse of the 1937-D Buffalo Nickel showcases an American bison standing on a mound, representing western wildlife. The bison was modeled after Black Diamond, a well-known resident of the New York Central Park Zoo. The denomination “FIVE CENTS” runs along the bottom, while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” complete the inscriptions on the coin.
