Augustus Saint-Gaudens is one of America’s greatest coin designers, having created two of the most beautiful coin designs for circulation in the 20th century. Personally commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905, his greatest work remains in production at the US Mint today on the official gold bullion coin of the nation. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt reached out to Augustus Saint-Gaudens directly to seek his assistance in producing new images for various denominations of American currency. President Roosevelt was seeking to revamp all American denomination designs to reflect the growing stature and cultural growth of the country.
President Roosevelt sought four designs of Liberty from Saint-Gaudens to help replace designs from US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, with two of Saint-Gaudens’ four designs eventually chosen for the US Eagle denominations of gold coins. His beautiful Liberty image featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933 and was revived in 1986 for the obverse of the American Gold Eagle bullion coin.
The obverse of these 1 oz SilverTowne Saint-Gaudens Copper Rounds replicates the beautiful design. Liberty is shown in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer with a torch held up in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. Rays of sunshine frame her figure from behind as a ring of 50 stars encircles the design field.
On the reverse of the 1 oz Saint-Gaudens Copper Rounds is an image of an American bald eagle with its back to the viewer as it swoops down. Its talons are reaching out below it and its wings are spread wide. You will find an additional design of the initials “USA” near a single American star.
